Our STARS (Student Technology Advisors and Resource Services) program utilizes a reverse-mentoring model whereby students teach the teachers.

In addition to fostering closer relationships between students and faculty, STARS enables teachers to create web sites, learn image editing, audio and video capture techniques, importing and exporting in a wide variety of formats and many other skills that they can use to deliver course information via the Internet.

STARS utilizes knowledgeable students to work with faculty with skills on a broad range of computer-related topics.
Typically, topics covered will include creating web pages, image creation, scanning and pdf files and the skills needed to teach distance learning courses.

The STARS program is less formal than "workshop" situations, allowing teachers to create their own training program and pace for those skills he or she would like to learn. Most faculty meet on a weekly basis for at least one hour during a semester with their STARS coach in our lab located in GITC 0300.

Each faculty member who arranges to work with a STARS coach can design his or her own path of study. However, many faculty members have similar interests in developing their technology skills. Our most popular projects involve faculty creating web sites for themselves and their courses and learning to use online materials to supplement a face to face class or teach online.

In cooperation with the Teaching, Learning and Technology group technology workshops are offered throughout the year in 1 - 3 hour sessions, as well as one, two and three day faculty institutes where you will have the opportunity to learn a multitude of instructional technology programs and skills. The STARS students act as hands-on aides and often teach sessions. All programs are offered free of charge to any NJIT faculty member.
