Each
faculty member who arranges to work with a STARS coach can
design his or her own path of study. However, many faculty
members have similar interests in developing their technology
skills. Our most popular projects involve faculty creating
web sites for themselves and their courses and learning to
use online materials to supplement a face to face class or
teach online. What follows are some typical paths for this
study.
Basic
Web Design
The Basic Web Design course is geared toward NJIT faculty
who have little or no experience with computers, the Internet,
and/or web page design. This course covers everything from
basic use of Windows-based PC’s to publishing a finished web
page. The faculty will meet with the STARS coach for in-depth,
one-on-one instruction on how to use various tools to perform
various tasks. The faculty member will learn about the World
Wide Web, using e-mail as a form of communication, basic NJIT
web design guidelines and motifs, use of good design practices,
how to use Netscape Composer to create web pages, and publish
them to the EIES or AFS servers. After taking this course,
a faculty member should be able to design simple web pages
containing contact information, vita, course outlines and
syllabus, be proficient in using a web browser, e-mail client,
and publishing their work via FTP (File Transfer Protocol).
Intermediate
Web Design
The
Intermediate Web Design course is geared toward NJIT faculty
who have basic experience with computers, the Internet, and/or
web page design and would like to continue their education
in order to develop more sophisticated sites.
As
in the basic course, the faculty will meet with the STARS
coach for in-depth, one-on-one instruction on how to use various
tools. This course covers web page creation with Microsoft’s
Frontpage, Netscape Composer or Macromedia Dreamweaver (if
faculty have access to the software), image editing for web
delivery and other useful applications all intended to add
greater sophistication to web sites.
After
taking this course, a faculty member should (in addition to
the skills in the basic course) be able to design fairly complex
web pages containing forms, frames and custom graphics.
Advanced Web Design
This
course is for NJIT faculty who wish to go beyond the ordinary
and create special effects. As in the basic course, the faculty
will meet with the STARS coach for in-depth, one-on-one instruction
on how to use various tools. This course covers HTML coding for full control of the web
page and JavaScript, thus enabling dynamic events to occur
which are responsive to the user’s input.
Some CGI will also be covered which will enable the
passage of information back to the server to, for example,
maintain databases and/or statistics. After taking this course,
a faculty member should be able to design complex sites containing
animated GIFs, VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language), QuickTime,
AVI, Real Video, etc., as well as interactive forms, and dynamic
graphical menus.
Teaching
With Online Elements
Faculty
who wish to deliver learning via the web and/or CD-ROM's
to
supplement a traditional class (creating what is often termed
a "hybrid" class) or is moving into teaching at
a distance, should follow this path. This would involve not
only skills in web design but also distance learning platforms
such as WebCT or WebBoard. After taking this course, a faculty
member should be able to deliver their syllabus & lectures
and lead discussions via the web. Some skills include building
a modular training curriculum and incorporating online and
traditional learning activities.
OTHER
ACTIVITIES
Common faculty needs that can
be served through the STARS program include learning how to:
do scanning of images
and documents to PDF files, faculty web sites, imaging
tools (such as PhotoShop), preparing materials for online
courses (WebCT, video) and help with campus-licensed programs
such as Microsoft Project, PowerPoint, and other Office programs.
