IVS
provides video production services for NJIT while operating the
Interactive Television Room in 1403, Candid Classroom in 1402, Multipurpose
Lecture Hall in 1400 and a fully equipped, broadcast-quality television
studio and editing facility and the Master Control.
During
an average semester, IVS will produce over 30 hours a week of taped
and interactive material. The main activities involve the production
and distribution of telecourse programming. Topics range from Calculus
to Data Mining to Advanced Networking. Since 1981, over 150 telecourses
have been produced for distribution.
As the technology evolved that made transmission and two-way interactivity
more affordable, IVS has actively been involved with many of modes
of distribution: Satellite broadcast has been used for reaching
US students as well as those in Africa and Thailand; the fiber optic
based, Bell Atlantic Interactive Distance Learning Service (BAIDLS)
for reaching students at branch campuses, such as Raritan Valley
Community College and Bergen County CC; ISDN for reaching students
at corporate sites nationwide and internationally; some programming
is also available as video streaming over the Internet.

Modes
of Delivery
Besides video streaming, courses are being developed for CD-ROM
distribution as well as the traditional tape circulation
methods. Utilizing SMIL programming, we are able to present multiple
screens, such as the instructor and their notes, simultaneously.
Imbedded links enable the user to access notes or supplemental information
either on the disc or from the web.
Besides
the Distance Learning activities, IVS is actively involved in satellite
teleconferences, both uplinking and downlinking; special event taping;
videotape duplication (including standards conversions); production
of promotional materials; video to enhance classroom instruction
and specialized conference support. Many of our programs, such as
the NJ Literary Hall of Fame have been aired through the local PBS
affiliate, NJN and have won awards for outstanding programming.
IVS
works in the analog as well as the digital domains for production
of their material:
- Analog - 3/4, SVHS, VHS, 8mm
- Digital - DVCAM, DVCPRO, Mini DV, Hi-8.
- Coversions to: Real, AVI and MPEG for streaming & CD ROM distribution.
Distance
Learning and Video Production Facilities
The
Distance Learning Production Facilities, as well as the other production
support facilities, make up the Advanced Communications Center and
have been standardized for ease of use by the instructor/presenter.
All three production facilities feature:
-
remote-controlled
cameras
-
a
"Visualizer" for graphic materials
-
ability
to view 3 locations simultaneously
-
multimedia
PC with Zip drive, CD-ROM
-
connectivity
to local campus network & the Internet
-
TV
monitors for student and instructor viewing
-
telephone,
FAX lines,
-
wireless
instructor microphone and desktop student microphones.
These rooms are also networked to the Master
Control, allowing for live transmission and reception of classes
via microwave transmission, ITFS, Verizons Interactive Distance
Learning System (IDLS) and connectivity for the viewing of satellite
downlinks.
