1403 GITC
ITV (Interactive Television Room)
Unlike the Candid Classroom, the ITV room was designed with the purpose
of conducting live two way classes with a remote site(s). The
room is comprised of:
- 10 tables (seating 2 each for a total capacity of 20) laid out in two arcs;
- teacher’s podium
- and a ‘Media Wall’.
Connectivity for this room is handled mainly from our interconnected Master
Control Room.
The networks available to us are:
- ISDN (384 kbps),
- H.323,
- Partial T1 (dedicated to Mt Laurel Campus)
- Verizon IIDLS Fiber Network (Interactive Distance Learning Service).
We can connect to 3 different locations simultaneously.

Due
to its size and configuration, 1403 is also a great
place for receiving satellite downlinks or for small
presentations. Each student table has a microphone
on it so the remote site can hear them ask questions.

The face to face students look forward to the instructors podium
and Media Wall. The large monitors on the media wall are for Left) Viewing the
remote sites.Right) to view the instructors visuals, be
they PC based, hard copy or a VHS tape. The
camera for viewing students is located near the top middle
of the wall and is controlled by the instructor. The
VCR on the lower left is used for playback and the one on the
lower right for recording. A
campus phone is on the extreme right of the wall.
The
instructor controls the class activities from the podium area.
A wireless mic is used to allow for more freedom of mobility. The items on the instructor’s podium are the
Visualizer, Remote control keypad, PC and status monitors.
The
visualizer serves two purposes: one it is mainly used for hard
copy display (note that there is a small LCD monitor on the
Visualizer, which can be used to center and focus your visual
before selecting it for viewing. Second,
it is used as a secondary switch for selecting what visuals
are viewed by the class: Visualizer, Computer or VHS tape. Other controls are for the zoom, focus and
light controls unit.
Most of the room’s activities are controlled by the wireless remote
controller seen below. From
it, you control the camera/input selections that are sent to
the remote sites. These controls are in the lower right hand
quadrant. The row that
says ‘SEND” is to select your display: “You” (the instructors
camera) , ‘ Students’ (student
camera), ‘ELMO’ (for the Visualizer) and ‘Far Site” (displays
the remote site). Moving
the cameras require you to first press the button on the ‘PREVIEW” row
then you can use the ‘Zoom’ or
the “Pan/Tilt’ button. To
make life easier, there are some pre-set positions numbered
1-4. Pressing them
will take you to a camera setup already in the memory. 1) Medium shot of the instructor at the podium
2) Students on the left hand side of the room 3) Students in
the middle and 4) Students on the right.
Depending
on the method of connectivity and the equipment at the remote
site, you may be able to control their cameras as well! These
controls are in the upper right quadrant and the button functionality
is similar to those mentioned above.
IN
ORDER FOR THE KEYPAD TO WORK, IT NEEDS A CLEAR LINE
OF SITE TO THE RECEIVER, WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE
CAMERA DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE INSTRUCTOR. TAKE CARE NOT TO HAVE THE REMOTE TOO CLOSE
TO THE PANEL IN FRONT OF THE PODIUM.
|
Next
to the instructor’s camera is a ‘remote’ monitor. This
enables the instructor to view the remote site while looking
toward the live, face to face class. By
having the camera next to the monitor, it gives the illusion
to the remote site that you are looking at them.
The
PC is networked for on and off-campus access. One
monitor shows your PC; the monitor to the far right is the ‘Send’ status
monitor. It displays
what is being sent out from the room to remote students.

All room controls are located behind the media wall, and are operated
by the ITMS staff.
